Capulana is the name of the imaginatively printed fabrics that women in Mozambique wear as a wrap-around skirt, a dress, a baby-carrier, or even a sort of turban. A capulana we brought with us inspires Birgit Reiter and me to dig through our shared memories of our time in southeast Africa. My memories seem quite clear to me—but hers are completely different. We’re feeling our way through the cloud of memory.
